French Impressionists

French Impressionists

The Impressionists’ ability to capture colour, light and movement is still greatly admired. This is a rare opportunity to see works usually only on display in Sweden’s capital, as well as pieces from the Walker’s collection. Renoir, Monet, Degas and Rodin are featured in this intimate exhibition of 13 treasured works, including Monet’s 'Break-up of the ice on the Seine' and Renoir’s 'Young Parisian Lady'. There are also bronze sculptures by Rodin and Degas. The exhibition is a collaboration between National Museums Liverpool and Nationalmuseum Stockholm. At Lady Lever Art Gallery from 20 February until 31 May 2009. Image: Renoir, Conversation © Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

Shoot Nations

Shoot Nations

‘Young People in a Changing Climate’ is the theme of this thought-provoking photography exhibition based on an international competition. Participants aged 11 – 24 were asked to submit images on how they are being affected by climate change. The striking results highlight issues of global inequality as witnessed by young people across the world. Shoot Nations is the result of a partnership between Plan, the international children’s charity, and Shoot Experience, a photographic events company. At the International Slavery Museum until 28 June 2009. Image: Be the change - make the right choice.

George Always: Portraits of George Melly by Maggi Hambling

George Always: Portraits of George Melly by Maggi Hambling

George Always is a celebration of one of Liverpool’s most colourful characters, the late George Melly. This exhibition features more than 20 paintings and drawings by his good friend the acclaimed-artist Maggi Hambling. Best known as a jazz performer, his larger-than-life persona earned him the nickname 'Good Time George' and this vivacity comes through in the pictures. Many of the paintings deal with the subject of George’s death, but they are far from morbid. Tender, challenging, serious and funny, these are highly original and imaginative portraits. As a keen patron of the arts in Liverpool, we are sure George would be thrilled! At the Walker Art Gallery from 27 February until 31 May 2009. Image: George Always 1 © Maggi Hambling.
